Beautiful Buddha Breaks Record
In our March Fine Estates Auction one lot – lot 273 to be exact – set a new Briggs Auction record, selling for $200,000 (hammer price). Auction fever built almost immediately for this serene-faced, robed Buddha, who sits in quiet contemplation on a lotus base, making a graceful vitarka mudra with his hand. From the opening bid until the hammer came down, anticipation for this lot was palpable, and bidding was fast and steady, building to an exciting crescendo at the final bid.
What makes this Buddha so special? "It was right," says Stephen Turner, Briggs Auction's owner. "The figure was unusually large at 13 inches tall, and very heavy. The underside of the statue bears a Yongle mark, which adds to its historical significance, and its fine condition added to its value". The Buddha came from a Main Line Estate.
What will our next auction record be? The sky's the limit!
