Five Ways to Style Artwork

by Stephanie Germana

One of the most common things that we hear during customer interactions is that they wish they could buy more art but don’t have enough wall space. My favorite response is, “Sure you do! You just need a little help styling it!” Gone are the days of singular pieces, symmetry, and matching frames. We’ve got you covered with fresh takes - and Friday’s Discovery Art Auction is filled with the perfect pieces to try your new ideas out on!

1) The Gallery Wall

The perfect way to showcase a collection of artwork ranging in different sizes and styles. To create a gallery wall, start by choosing a focal point for the wall, such as a large piece of art or a mirror. Then, arrange the other pieces of art around the focal point in a way that you like. This is a great opportunity to blend different periods and mediums, focusing on what you like and how they can all work together to showcase your personal style.

2) The Front & Center

Considered the more traditional route, it’s perfect for a single, large, and show-stopping piece of art. This method is also a great way to add a piece that ties the room together; Using bright bold colors can offset neutral furniture, or a neutral piece of art can bring a calming presence to a room with more eclectic designs.

3) The Asymmetrical Look

This is certainly a more modern way to hang artwork that has become more and more popular in recent years, and it's perfect for grouping smaller pieces together. To create an asymmetrical display, start by hanging one piece of art in the center of the wall. Then, add other pieces of art around it in a way that feels balanced, but not symmetrical. You can always use different sizes and frames (even empty ones!) to create a more visually pleasing display.

4) The Floating Frame

Listen, we know that sometimes the best art has been through a lot - that will happen if it’s survived for 100+ years. This method is an easy way to breathe new life into artwork or showcase a frameless piece that deserves a spot on the wall or shelf. The easiest way to achieve this look is to purchase a floating frame kit, but don’t be afraid to DIY the project by hitting up your local hardware store and asking for tips!

5) The Shelf Addition

Perfect for smaller pieces, adding a framed piece of artwork to a shelf or shelving unit can bring depth and distinctiveness among an array of books or decorative items. Simply lean the item up against the back of the shelf, or purchase a plate stand to give it height and more shape.
