Artist Spotlight: Biagio Pinto
Biagio Pinto (1911-1989) was an American painter from Philadelphia. He and his brothers, Angelo and Salvatore, grew up at 1827 South 16th Street in Point Breeze and had a studio at 10 South 18th Street. Biagio developed a passion for art at a young age and enrolled in the Barnes Foundation's art education program.
Dr. Albert Barnes, a well-known patron of local artists, purchased four of the Pinto brothers' paintings for his personal collection, making them the first local artists to be included. He avidly supported the three brothers by granting them scholarships for study and travel, which took them to Europe where they met Henri Matisse. Matisse's influence is evident in Biagio's vibrant modernist landscapes.
Known for his modernist landscapes, still life and portrait paintings, Pinto's work is held in the collections of the Barnes Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Woodmere Art Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
