Harry Everett Townsend (American, 1879-1941). A charcoal and gouache on paper illustration depicting military soldiers titled “A Rough Crowd But All Die Hards”. Initialed lower left. Framed under glass. Mat opening: 9-1/4in x 7-1/4in. Townsend was a student of Howard Pyle. In 1917, he was commissioned with seven other artists to record the First World War. His paintings and drawings are in the collection of the Smithsonian and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and Free Library of Philadelphia.

Robinson studied with Howard Pyle at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1909-1910 and specialized in magazine covers, including The Saturday Evening Post.

A partial Salvador Dali portfolio of illustrations for “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Numbered 1643 of 2,500 copies, this lot includes only four color illustrations: “Pig and Pepper”, “The Rabbit Sends in a Little Bill”, “A Caucus Race and a Long Tale”, and “The Pool of Tears”. Portfolio lacks cover page and a few text pages that were attached to missing illustrations. In a clamshell hard case. Case: 2-3/4in x 13in x 18-1/2in.

Clamshell case shows separation, staining, and wear. Lacking pieces already noted. Incomplete portfolio.
